Abstract: This study was carried out with the objective to determine the antimicrobial activity of the tuber extract of Dioscorea alata (purple yam) by in vitro-disc diffusion assay method against a single cultured bacterial strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The extraction of Dioscorea alata tuber was performed by using ethanol as the solvent. Paper discs were impregnated with the tuber extract and placed on Mueller - Hinton agar inoculated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Mupirocin was used as positive control. The zone of inhibition was calculated by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone in millimeter using a Vernier caliper. The crude extract tested positive for flavonoids and glycosides. Result for antimicrobial testing found that there was no zone of inhibition against P. aeruginosa.
