In girls, it happens when there is development of the breast, armpit or pubic hair, mature external genitalia and there is occurrence of the first menstruation before 8 years of age. The frequency of precocious puberty is about 4-5% and associated causes include genetics, increased body fat, structural abnormalities in the brain and hormone secreting tumors.
