Furthermore, several studies show good correlation between visceral fat thickness and fatty changes of the liver. The study investigated the relationship of visceral fat thickness (perinephric fat) with hepatic steatosis using non-contrast multi detector CT scan of the whole abdomen as predictor and for prognostication among patients seen at FEU-NRMF Medical Center from January 2010 to December 2012. This is a retrospective cross sectional study that reviewed medical charts of 211 patients who underwent non-contrast MDCT of the whole abdomen examination from January 2010 to December 2012 at FEU-NRMF Medical Center. Univariate analysis was used to describe the perinephric fat thickness and lipid profile levels while the chi-square test determined the relationship between perinephric fat thickness, hyperlipidemia and BI with hepatic steatosis. Patients with hepatic steatosis were found to have thicker perinephric fats with mean of 14 mm (5-25mm). Their mean liver HU was 34.76; mean TC, TAG and HDL were: 5.67, 1.75 and 1.30 mmol/L respectively. These showed that they had hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, but normal HDL. A statistically significant difference in mean perinephric fat thickness, liver HU, TC, and TAG between patients with and without hepatic steatosis were obtained. The p values obtained for association of hepatic steatosis with perinephric fat thickness, TC, TAG and HDL were: 1.368, 0.97, 0.010631 and 0.745 respectively.
