TI - Predictors of dengue hemorrhagic fever in patients with acute febrile illness at FEU-NRMF Medical Center from January 2006 - October 2007 / AV - MED20070008 PY - 2007/// CY - Fairview, Quezon City PB - Department of Medicine, FEU-NRMF N1 - Includes appendices and bibliographical references; RESDM N2 - ABSTRACT: A non-randomized prospective cohort study was conducted in166 patients admitted at FEU-NRMF from January 2006 October 2007 adult patients, no co-morbid illness, with a history of fever for at least 3 days and no focus of infection will be included in the study. We enrolled a total of 166 subjects into the study, 80 (48.2%) of which were male and 86 (51.8&) of which were female. the mean age was 31.57 + 12.52 years (range of 19-88). Of the 166 study subjects, 29 were diagnosed with dengue hemorrhagic fever (17.5%) and 137 (82%) were diagnosed with Systematic Viral Illness. Elevations of Hematocrit > 20% were seen in 10% of DHF patients. Among those patients admitted with a diagnosis of systemic viral illness, 73 patients (44%) had WBC count of > 5,000x10/L and 93 patients (56%) had a WBC count of < 5,000x10/L. One hundred twenty seven patients (76.5%) had ANC level of less than 4,000 and 39 patients (23.5%) had an ANC of >4,000. Of the 127 patients who had an ANC of <4,000, 28 patients (22.2%) had a final diagnosis of DHF and 98 patients (77.8%) had a final diagnosis of systemic viral illness. On univariate and multivariate analysis, only ANC (p=.004) and WBC count (p=.0001) were considered significant predictors for the development of DHF. Gender, hematocrit levels, LDH levels and SGPT were not considered significant predictors for the development of DHF ER -
