ABSTRACT: The prevalence of new cases of Diabetes Mellitus in adult patients is determined. From January 2004- May 2005 patients admitted were tested for Random Blood Sugar (RBS) and those with levels more than or equal to 200 mg/dL were subjected to HbA1c. The prevalence of hyperglycemia on admitted patients was 2.02% (n=102) o and 85% (m=87) of the said patients had elevated HbA1c. The evaluation of patients admitted to the hospital due to various illnesses for Diabetes Mellitus may be used to detect undiagnosed preexisting DM. HbA1c can be used to distinguish stress -related hyperglycemia and hyperglycemia due to DM.
