Regina TI - Relationship of perceptions and practices of mothers with the incidence of diarrhea in children below 5 years. old in Zone 793, District V, Paco Manila AV - M CFM 1992 0007 PY - 1992/// CY - Manila PB - Department of Community and Family Medicine, FEU-NRMF N1 - Includes appendices and bibliographical references; THDCFM N2 - Abstract: A survey was conducted in Zone 793, District V of Paco, Manila, among 126 mothers who have children under 5 years. old, who had diarrhea from June to August 1992. The maternal perceptions and practices that might raise the occurrence of diarrhea were investigated as the incidence of diarrhea were also reported. The results showed that majority of mothers had a poor perception on the character (44%), frequency (56%), causation (dirty drinking water 70%), and preventive measures (clean drinking water 65%) of diarrhea disease. Seventy percent of the mothers give rice water "am" to their children as a food supplement. Over half of them (53%) thinks oral rehydration solution as a form of Medication is the best to give during an episode and dehydration (55%) as the main complication of diarrhea. Among the maternal practices, water sanitation seemed to be significant, with 36% of mothers sterilizing their drinking water. Food sanitation and the manner of waste disposal proved to be hygienic based on our study. In reference to personal hygiene, 19% of mothers take a bath everyday and 81% wash their hands before handling food. Over one fourth of mothers employ means to exterminate the insects (31%) and (35%) domesticate their animals. Over half of the population maintain and take care of their toilets. The incidence of diarrhea reported 21 cases for the month of June, 23 cases for July and 31 cases for the month of August ER -
