Abstract: This study aims to promote Breast Self-examination as means of early detection of Breast Cancer. The first year Female medical students of FEU-NRMF , SY 1996-1997 were subjected to a pre- & post- action evaluation, which determined their level of awareness regarding Breast Cancer, its Risk factors and Breast Self-examination (BSE) as a means of early detection. The data gathered were then subjected to statistical analysis using the student`s T-test for dependent samples with a 0.05 margin of error. Analysis of the general scores produced a significant value ( t = 19.49 ) higher than the set critical region of + 1.96. This shows that the action program was instrumental in increasing the subject`s level of awareness. Question analysis was also done and this produced the following results: there was a significant increases (= = 15.60, > 1.96 ) in the level of awareness with regards to those who are at risk of having breast cancer; a significant increase (+ = 6.28, > 1.96 ) in the level of awareness regarding the risk factors leading to breast cancer; a significant increase (+ = 10.00, > 1.96 ) in the level of awareness regarding methods of detecting breast cancer; and lastly, a significant increase (+ = 17.61, > 1.96 ) regarding the steps in performing breast self-examination (BSE) . From this, it can be concluded that a multi-media information campaign is an effective means of bringing about an increase in the level of awareness regarding breast cancer, its risk factors, and BSE as a means of early detection.
