DETERMINATION OF THE EFFECT OF AMPALAYA (MOMORDICA CHARANTIA) EXTRACT ON WOUND HEALING BY PRIMARY INTENTION IN 14 MALE ALBINO RATS (MUS MUSCULUS) - Quezon City FEU-NRMF ND - 29 pages

ABSTRACT: The effect of Ampalaya extract on wound healing by primary intention is investigated and compared to commonly used Betadine. The study tried to find out if there is any difference on the duration of wound healing by primary intention if ampalaya extract was applied on the wound. Wound healing property of Ampalaya extract was studied using incision wounds on the antero-dorsal side of the Albino rats. Three (3) incision wounds measuring 4mm in length and 2mm in depth were inficted to each rat, totalling 14 rats. The first incision (incision A) was treated with Ampalaya extract; the second incision (incision B) was treated with Betadine (Povidone Iodine 10%) as the positive conrrol; and the third incision (incisio C) was treated with nothing as the negative control. These are carried for the period of seven (7) days. Two (2) rats are killed using chloroform everyday and biopsies were done on the incision and were submitted for histopathology. The slides were read by a pathologist and were recorded. The results were computd using student`s t-test (one-tail). And the computed results show that Ampalaya treated group reveals that it has a greater collagen deposition but not that much significant. However Betadine shows to induce more neutrophilic infiltation. Both Ampalaya and Betadine are equal when it comes to macrophage and neovascularization. Therefore, based from the experimental study done, Ampalaya paste promotes excision wound healing in the rats shows not that much significant as much as the Betadine also don;t have much significant effect on wound healing process per se.
