EFFECTS OF APPLE IN LOWERING BLOOD CHOLESTEROL IN HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIC INDUCED SWISS MICE - Quezon City FEU-NRMF March 2003 - 24 pages

ABSTRACT:The study dealt with the determination of the cholesterol lowering effect of apple extract in Swiss mice. The biological test was conducted at the Bureau of Animal Industry. The blood collection was done to determine the baseline values of all mice (Group 1 Negative Control, Group II Positive Control, Group III Experimental Group). After 2 weeks of cholesterol induction, the positive control and experimental group showed a >30% increase in cholesterol level compared to the negative control. Apple extract was given for another 2 weeks in the experimental group, results showed a decrease in blood cholesterol level. The blood samples were analyzed using Kodak Ektachem Autoanalyzer. In conclusion to the experiment, it is proven that apples indeed have a significant effect on lowering cholesterol in hypercholesterolemic mice. Apple supplement therefore should be recommended in the diet to help lower cholesterol level in hypercholesterolemic patient.
