THE WEIGHT-REDUCING EFFECT OF GREEN COFFEE BEAN EXTRACT OF COFFEA LIBERICA ON MALE MUS MUSCULUS (WHITE MICE) - QUEZON CITY FEU-NRMF 2007 - 58 PAGES

The study was designed to test tha ability of green coffee bean extract ingestion (Coffea liberica; GCBE), which contain certain compounds (ie. chlorogenic acid caffeic acid) in weight reduction. Fifty Male Mus musculus (average weight of 18-20 grams) were assigned to 3 groups. The 3 groups were acclimatized for 14 days given standard non-purified diet before the experimentation proper. This allowed the animals to adjust to the new environment and gave the researchers an opportunity to identify any potentially infectious condition that may affect the study. One group (A) served as the control and received standard non-purified diet (CE-2), which consists of 4.4% fat, 24.8% protein, 51.6% carbohydrate and a total energy content of 1,445)/110g diet twice a day with no supplementation. Two groups served as the test groups and received the same standard non-purified diet with 0.2mL (B) and 0.4mL (C) GCBE of Coffea liberica, respectively. The animals were fed and, consequently, supplemented twice a day (i.e. 8 am and 3 pm). Treatment period lasted for 14 days (2 weeks) and baseline and final weight were measured and recorded accordingly. After the 14-day supplementation, body weight was significantly reduced in both the test groups while no significant reduction was observed in the control group using the paired t-test as the statistical tool (alpha=0.05). Furthermore, comparison of the means of the 3 groups showed a statistically sifnificant difference using the One-Way Analysis of Variance (alpha=0.05), which prompted the researchers to compare each group separately. Unfortunately, upon comparison of the control group to the test group separately using independent t-teat, it revealed no statistically significant difference between the results (alpha=0.05). Thus, the study concluded that though significant weight loss was observed in both test groups receiving the Coffea liberica GCBE, the recorded weight loss can not be attributed to the supplement given, since other factors may have affected the results.
