A total of 26 female subjects with a regular 28 days menstrual cycle were selected and divided into two groups. Baseline hemoglobin level was taken one week before the onset of menstruation to establish the normal values of the subjects. Then, a pretest was performed to determine the average normal iron loss on the last day of menstruation. The first group was asked to consume 100g of malunggay leaves per day to be included in their diet while the second group were asked to taken 325 mg of commercially prepared ferrous sulfate. This is continuously done until the last day of their next menstruation. Blood sample was then collected on that same day which served as their posttest. By the end of the study, the hemoglobin level increased by 6.59% in malunggay group while there is no significant increase among the ferrous sulfate group. The specific constituents of malunggay leaves, which are fiber, calcium, copper, vitamins A and vitamins C, have an effect on hemoglobin level. ER -
