520 _aABSTRACT: With the advancements in field of science regarding healthcare, the scientific improvements come with their significant counterparts, which become health problems that need to be addressed. Diabetes is usually treated through oral hypoglycemic agents and the use of insulin. The continous usage of hypoglycemic agents and insulin develops resistance towads these treatments and thus, the continous discovery of hypoglycemic agents is vital for the continous treatment of diabetes. The investigation of the hypoglycemic activity Eleusineindica (Parag-is) plant was undertaken to determine the ability of its decoction to act as a hypoglycemic agent to sucrose induced hyperglycemic Sprague Dawley Rats. The subjects were divided into two groups of experimental and controlled groups of five. Both groups were induced with hyperglycemic using sucrose (1% per body mass through oral lavege ). Treatment was done oral lavage of the decoction at 2mL. The efficacy of the plant extract was compared with the oral administration of distilled water. The hypoglycemic activity of the plant decoction was measured using the blood glucose levels after three (3) hours of treatment. Results of the study revealed that there is a significant difference between the initial and final blood glucose level of the experimental group of subjects when treated with the Eleusineindica (Parag-is) Decoction. This suggested that Eleusineindica (Parag-is) decoction possesses hypoglycemic activity on surcose-induced Sprague Dawlet rats and can be used as a feasible alternative to treating hyperglycemia.
