Women of reproductive age with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) may have an overall health maintenance impact brought by the lifestyle modifications during the pandemic. The objective of this study is to determine the lifestyle changes of women with polycystic ovarian syndrome on dietary habits, physical activity and sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2nd October 2021 -3rd of November 2021 involving females with PCOS aged 19-45 years old from PCOS Facebook groups. Consent from participants were obtained through Google forms, followed by a survey consisting of two sections: eligibility criteria and 12-item researcher-formulated lifestyle-related behavior questionnaire on dietary habits, physical activity and sleep. Descriptive statistics was applied on the collected data for qualitative analysis. The data showed that women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)experienced significant changes in their lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic, particullarly in diet, physical activity, and sleep. The majority experienced a positive change (increase) in their dietary intake and pattern. in terms of physical activity, negative changes (decrease) in exercise engagement and participation were observed. It was also noted that there was a significant positive change (increase) in screen time and participation in doing household chores. Moreover, positive change (increase) in the sleeping patterns and negative change (decrease) were observed in the duration and quality of sleep. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent imposition of quarantine and other protocols, there has been significant changes in the lifestyle of women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), particularly in their dietary habits, sleep, and physical activity. Most women reported an increase in dietary intake and pattern, as well as in their sleeping pattern, however there is a decrease in duration and quality of sleep. A decrease in physical activity was also reported, shown by the decrease in exercise engagement and participation, coupled with a significant increase in screen time. Thus, these findings augment the need for proper management interventions such as exercise, nutrition, and further medical consultations regarding sleep for women with PCOS in these COVID times. | ||
