In high income countries, patients requiring treatment for end stage kidney disease share around 2 to 3% of annual health care budget. On the other hand, developing countries experience a much worse problems with chronic kidney disease. Shear wave elastography is an ideal diagnostic tool for detecting possible renal pathologies in patients. It is considered to be non-invasive, and that patients are generally not exposed to radiation. This particular tool has a good sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing organ diseases. The propagation speed of shear wave will determine the stiffness of tissue. Several studies have disclosed that this particular technology could be used in evaluating stiffness of intravital tissue accurately. The aim of this study was to compare renal cortical elasticity with the use of shear wave elastography in non-hypertensive and hypertensive patients for equal to or more than one year. A prospective cross-sectional study was performed. The scheduled routine B-mode sonography of the patient was done first and once the scanning was completed, shear wave elastography of both kidneys was then done by s senior radiology residents and both studies were then counter-checked by the radiology consultant on duty. Data were then recorded. It could be noted that most of the patients who were hypertensive were in the above 36 years of age, male and were complaint to the antihypertensive medications. The researcher noted statistical significance between compliance to medication and shear wave value of the right and left kidneys. Patients who were not complaint were found to have a higher shear wave value compared to those who had no hypertension and those who were complaint to antihypertensive medications. | ||
