520 | _aABSTRACT: One out of three children in developing countries, including the Philippines, suffers from malnutrition and is estimated to be an underlying cause in more than one third of all deaths in children under five. It develops as a result of inadequate nutrition and disturbed social interactions contributing to poor weight gain, delayed development and abnormal behavior. Malnutrition is not just about diet and nutrition but involves a complex interplay of medical and psychosocial aspects needing close attention.Severe malnutrition in children if not properly addressed significantly affects the future development of an individual`s over all productivity. This clinical report intends to emphasize the importance of a holistic multidisciplinary approach in managing severe malnutrition. The index patient, AA, is a 15 month old female suffering from severe wasting(5.3kg) and severe stunting(66cm) with delays in speech and social development(Picture 1). Several factors such as poverty, poor education, poor family planning, misperceptions and the inability of the parents to avail of public health services for their children, all played a role in AA`s severe malnutrition. The Family Health CareProgram adopted AA in the program using the biopsychosocial model in a team-based approach in handling her severe malnutrition and guiding the family to self reliance with promising results. Interventions included nutritional build-up, immunizations, medical management, birth certificate registration, relief goods and livelihood assistance to meet short and medium term goals and educational assistance and family counseling to meet the long term goals. Careful monitoring of these goals is of utmost importance. | ||
