520 _aABSTRACT: A school improves a person`s potential whether physically, mentally, or socially, through different subject areas such as English, Filipino, Math, etc. in every level/year reached by a student, new information are acquired and new skill are enhanced. To implement this, an effective system of education is very significant, that why the formal system of education is being followed. The formal education system is a highly institutionalized education system, spanning lower primary school and the upper reaches of the university. In the Philippines, the nursing course is one of the most in-demand courses and it is delivered through formal education system. Over time, the demand for more health care providers in different countries increased significantly. Due to high opportunities that nursing has to offer, many are enticed to take up this course. Li Tsui Fen stressed that, education is one of the foundations a country can run for its own progress. McMeniman emphasized that nursing education refers to formal learning and training in the science of nursing, and education has a very powerful context in which attitudes are shaped, goal set, and knowledge and skills gained. Caruthers defined nursing as the process of caring for or nurturing another individual. According to Maglaya, abilities, knowledge, skills, judgment, attitudes and values for successful functioning in the position or role. The possession of these is what yields competence in an individual. According to Patricia Benner, a nurse undergoes five stages which is from the novice stage to the expert stage. This study was derived from Benner`s stages of clinical competency theory. In conducting the study, he instrument that was used was prepared and had been validated. The questionnaire needs to be validated to confirm if the delivery of the contents of the study is appropriate and correct. The instrument contained five parts consisting of demographic data of the respondents, which includes age and gender; Perceptions of the respondents regarding formal education system concerning academic skills performance; the importance of formal education system that are perceived by the respondents and how students develop from being a novice to a competent student nurse. After validation and preparation of instrument, the conduction of the survey was implemented. The respondents were the selected 3rd year nursing students from Saint Dominic Savio College.
