520 _aAbstract: he objective of the study are to determine the lethal dose ( LD50 ) of Euphorbia hirta L. lyophilized extract on Sprague- Dawley rats, Second, the researchers describe the acute toxidrome of Euphobia hirta L. (tawa-tawa) based on the changes in central nervous, respiratory, autonomic, eyes, ears behavior and weight. Third, is to describe the gross and histolopathologic changes in Sprague Dawley rats in 3 days brought about by Euphorbia hirta L. The study used the Fixed Dose Procedure and Quasi-Experimental design. The leaves, stem, flower were subjected to decoction, a process where in the leaves where extracted by boiling. After decoction, it was lyophilized to obtain powdered from the water-soluble components. The subjects were randomly chosen, one rat was used for the sighting study and five rats were used for the main study. The dose for the sighting study was 300mg/kg body weight and used 2000mg/kg body weight for the main study. The lyophilized Tawa-Tawa extract was tested on laboratory experimental rats and was given single dose via lavage. There were no, incidence (0%) central nervous depression, on the other hand there were 100% increase in the respiratory rate and startle response, only 20% exhibited fine and course body tremors. Furthermore, only 20% exhibited changes in the eyes, there were no significant findings in the ears, in automatic changes, 20% exhibited salivation and 1005 exhibited tail lashing, pilo motor erection and increase body temperature. For behavioral changes 100% exhibited passivity and there were also an increased body weight with an average of 0.6 grams. The researchers conclude that the LD50 of Euphorbia hirta L. (Tawa-Tawa) is greater than 2000mg/kg/bw. The extract has no significant toxic effect on the central nervous system, respiratory system, autonomic nervous system, general appearance of the eyes & ears, body weight and behaviour of Sprague Dawley rats. Also, the researchers conclude that there are no gross abnormality in the organs of Sprague Dawley rats including, heart, lungs, liver kidneys, spleen, as well as in the small and large intestines. Lastly, the histopathologic results are not sufficient to conclude that there is no toxicity at a dose of 2000mg/kg/bodyweight due to poor specimen quality.
