520 | _aAbstract: This study was conducted to investigate the histological protective potential of Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (tomato) extract on the liver of male Mus musculus (albino mice) exposed to sub-lethal dose of acetaminophen. Twenty mice were divided into five groups representing the control group (T0), the group that was given with 300mg/kg acetaminophen (T1) and the groups that were pre-administered with the different concentrations of tomato extract which was 10% (T2), 20% (T3) and 40% (T4). Hepatotoxicity was induced by the administration of sub-lethal dose of acetaminophen (300mg/kg). Cell size of the hepatocytes was taken using ocular micrometer. Histopathological analysis of liver's structure was done by means of photo microscopy. Numerical data were computed using One-Way Anova and Turkey Kramer HSD. Results showed that T0, T3 and T4 are significantly different to T1 in terms of cell size T1, T2 are not significantly different suggesting that lower concentrations of tomato extract are not sufficient to induce protection against acetaminophen toxicity. However, T0 and T4 showed no significant difference which indicated that T4 was the most effective in preventing liver damage induced by acetaminophen. lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (tomato) extract may posses hepatoprotective effects on the acetaminophen induced hepatotoxicity in mice. | ||
