Online resources: Summary: Abstract: Hypothesis: The use of FES with Curl-ups is more effective in strengthening and firming the abdominal musculature more than with curl-ups alone on the 3rd year PT students of FEU-NRMF. Problem: What will be more effective in strengthening and firming the abdominal musculature on healthy individuals, FES with curl-ups or curl-ups alone? This research entitled, “A Comparative Study Between the Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation with Curl Ups and Curl Ups Alone in Strengthening and Firming the Abdominal Musculature of the 3rd year Physical Therapy Students of FEU-NRMF”, aimed to compare the effects of FES with curl-ups versus curl-ups alone in increasing the strength of the abdominal muscles, reducing the waist line, as well as fats in the abdominal region. The general objective of this study is to determine what is more effective in strengthening and firming the abdominal muscle, FES with curl-ups or curl-ups alone. The specific objectives are to determine if FES with Curl Ups will increase muscle strength of the abdominal muscle more than with curl-ups alone, and to determine if FES with curl-ups will be more efficient in decreasing the pt.’s waistline and fat measurement. This study utilized on experimental design. Population used was the 3rd year PT students of FEU-NRMF. Subject selection is through survey filling-out questionnaires and is evaluated on muscle strength thru MMT. From the survey, 14 subjects were selected and were divided into 2 groups. The first group is the experimental group who performed curl-ups with FES for 7SH x 10 reps x 3 sets to be done daily for 1 month. The 2nd group is the control group who performed curl-ups alone which is also set for 7SH x 10 reps x 3 sets to be done daily as well. The researchers then measured the strength of the abdominal muscles by MMT, waistline by tape measure and fats using the caliper before the implementation for baseline values. The research was provided for with the same procedure for 1 month and the subjects were re-evaluated 2x a week. The data gathered were analyzed through Analysis of Variance, Mann-Whitney test, and the 2-independent sample test. The results of ANOVA showed that FES with curl-ups has a significant change in increasing and firming the abdominal musculature than with curl-ups alone.
