Summary: ABSTRACT: Availability of safe blood and its products is an important component in improving health care and preventing the transmission of infections. Millions of lives are saved each year through transfusion, yet the quality and safety of blood transfusion is of continuing concern particularly in developing countries. To determine the prevalence rate of transfusion transmissible diseases among volunteer blood donors, a 2 year retrospective study was conducted at FEU-NRMF blood bank. Serologic tests were done using Elisa in determining HbsAg, HCV, and HIV; RPR for syphilis and peripheral blood smear for malaria. There were 7485 donors screened. 400 donors were found reactive to transfusion transmitted diseases giving an average prevalence rate of 5.3%. Majority of the subjects are HbsAg reactive with an average prevalence rate of 3.9%. This figure approximates the prevalence rate in the general population. Nonetheless, we recommend that future studies on the factors that may contribute to this prevalence rate be made.
