Summary: ABSTRACT: De Quervain`s thyroiditis, sometimes referred to as granulomatous or subacute thyroiditis, is a spontaneously remitting inflammatory condition of the thyroid gland that may last for weeks to several months. It has a tendency to recur. The gland is typically involved as a whole, adn thyroidal RAIU is much depressed. Transient hyperthyroxinemia, elevation of the serum TG concentration and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and sometimes the WBC during the early acute phase are characteristic if not pathognomic. This is a case of a 22 year old female with signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism with associated odynophagia and a tender thyroid gland and was diagnosed to have de Quervain`s thyroiditis or subacute thyroiditis.
