Summary: ABSTRACT: The antimicrobial effect of chitosan was demonstrated by doing a culture and sensitivity test using the following organism: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacilus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The zone of inhibition was based on the following drug of choice: Gentamicin (10 ug) for P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and B. subtilis; Cefotaxime (30 ug) for E. coli and Nystatin for C. albicans, Antimicrobial assay revealed that chitosan exhibited antibacterial property on both gram positive and negative bacteria as well as an antifungal effect.
