Abstract: Surgical site infection (SSI)isa common complicationoccurringwithin30daysaftersurgery.Theincidenceworldwideis2to5% and11.8% in developing countries. In our institution, the rate is 12.68% in 2000 to 2013. This has great implications on patient's morbidity and mortality. Prevention measures involve pre-, inter-and post-surgical strategies, management of risk factors and stringent infection control practices in the operating room. Compare the efficacy of Benzalkonium Chloride/Isopropyl alcohol versus Povidone-iodine in preventing surgical site infection among women undergoing Obstetric Surgery procedures. There were 102female participants involved, aged 18 to 65 years old who underwent major Obstetric surgical procedures. Participants were randomly assigned to treatment groups. Group A were given Benzalkonium chloride/isopropyl alcohol solution while group B were given povidone-iodine antiseptic. Assessment for SSI and occurrence of adverse reactions were done on the on the 3rd, 10th, 20thand 30thpostoperative days. Incidence of surgical site infection is4.90% (5/102 participants). This was noted in 3participants in the Povidone-iodine groupand2 in the Benzalkonium chloride/Isopropyl alcohol group. The difference of SSI rate between the two groups is not statistically significant. No adverse effects noted. Benzalkonium chloride/isopropyl alcohol used as an antiseptic I solution is comparable with Povidone-iodine in preventing Surgical Site infection in patients undergoing low-risk Obstetric Surgeries. Therefore, it can be used a viable option as a preoperative skin antisepsis solution.
