ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Research is widely valued for equipping individuals with skills and promoting lifelong learning. However, the increasing trend of unused research, termed "shelf ware," raises concerns about its impact. This study focuses on exploring the Far Eastern University – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation Medical Laboratory Science research outputs from 2019-2023. The
objective is to bridge the gap between research findings and practical application in healthcareand education.
METHODOLOGY: The study is an exploratory research, targeting the FEU-NRMF School of Medical Laboratory Science. Ethical considerations ensure confidentiality, and data analysis includes qualitative methods, percentages, and utilization rates. The data were collected through the answers of the former and present research advisors, which were coded through a
thematic analysis method using initial coding, line by line coding, up to synthesizing the theme or narrative of the answers.
RESULT: An analysis of research conducted in SMLS from 2019 to 2023 found that research was underutilized due to a lack of academic publication.
CONCLUSION: Many studies had insignificant data with limited immediate clinical applicability, contributing to this issue. Additionally, financial constraints and insufficient institutional support further hindered publication rates. In contrast, research in diagnostic fields, laboratory management, and immunoserology, when adequately resourced and guided by experts, had a
higher likelihood of publication and practical application due to their direct relevance to academic and clinical advancements.
