ABSTRACT It has been widely known that curl-ups are done in supine position, which puts the body against gravity, adding resistance to the abdominal muscles. This is done by attempting to assume a semi-sitting position until the interior angles of the scapulae rise from the supporting surface. With this motion, the abdominal muscles eccentrically and concentrically contract; as the body rises from the supporting surface, the abdominal muscle concentrically contract and as the body slowly goes back to the supine position, the abdominals eccentrically contract. Duplex pulley is exercise equipment usually used to strengthen the upper extremity, but its use to exercise the abdominals may also be seen in some health gyms. With the person`s back facing the pulley, the exercise is done by pulling the elastic straps down, while tucking the abdominals. This exercise is may be in the clinics to strengthen the abdominal area on patients suffering from low back pain. The determinants needed to increase muscle strength include intensity, volume, repetition, sets/bouts, frequency, rest, duration, mode exercise, speed.
