COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT OF MORINGA OLEIFERA SEED EXTRACT (MALUNGGAY) WITH THE STANDARD DRUG, ASPIRIN - QUEZON CITY FEU-NRMF 1999

ABSTRACT: The anti-inflammatory property of Moringa oleifera seed extract (Malunggay) and aspirin was compared in this study. This is to determine the effectivity with the seed extract as well as its effective dose in reducing the inflammation induced by 1% carrageenan. A total of 25 swiss mice were then subjected to the experimentation proper that of which 5 mice served as the (-) control (NSS), 10 mice as the (+) control (ASA) and another 10 mice as the extract group respectively. Inflammation of the paw was induced by injection of 1% carrageenan. Its measurement in each group served as our basis of results. It was found out that Moringa oleifera (Malunggay) seed extract significantly reduced inflammation by 0.0443mL as compared with Aspirin which reduced inflammation by 0.0366 ml. As computed in the statistical analysis using t-test, we can say that Moringa oleifera (Malungay) seed extract is comparable to Aspirin as an anti inflammatory agent with a -0.0077 difference. If further studies would be done, it is suggested that larger animals be used instead of mice, that a standard plethysmometer be used, and the adverse effects and component of Malunggay responsible for its anti-inflammatory effect be studied as well.
