Abstract: The study examined the effects of the fruit of Capsicum frutescens on sperm count and motility of male mice, Mus musculus. Thirty-two adult male mice were randomly distributed to four treatment groups, (1) negative control (dH20), (2) 3.3%, (3) 6.6% and (4) 10% crude ethanolic extract treatment. All treatments were orally administered by gavage with distilled water as carrier for the crude extract. The treatment proceeded on one month duration. Mice were sacrificed and their epididymis was collected. Sperm count, viability and motility were evaluated. The effects on epididymal sperm count and sperm motility were statistically significant. High concentrations of Capsicum crude extract, was seen at 10% treatment group, while 75% mortality was observed at the 3.3% concentration group due to factors not attributed to the treatment procedure. Mechanisms by which Capsaicin effect sperm parameters are by 1) increasing metabolic rate, and 2) antioxidant properties inherent to capsaicinoids.
