| Summary, etc. | Abstract: Pulmonary tuberculosis is a disease which can either be prevented or treated. But in spite of the advent of modern therapeutic measures and campaigns to fight it, still it remains a serious public health problem. Among the high risk groups are jeepney drivers. They encounter people from all walks of life each day. Not only are they at risk, they may also be carriers of the disease. This study was aimed in determining presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in jeepney drivers of Morayta-Divisoria Route. On August 1998, sputum specimen collection was conducted. 10 acceptable specimens were brought to FEU-NRMF Central Laboratory for examination employing the Acid Fast concentration Kinyoun Stain Method. In this preliminary report, no acid fast bacili were seen in the 10 sputum specimens of jeepney drivers. This result, however, does not lead to the conclusion that there are no cases of pulmonary tuberculosis in the said sample population and it is not sufficient to disprove the probabilities regarding the roles played by jeepney drivers in the etiology of the disease. The researchers have identified several factors that affected the result which are categorized into three: a. reluctance on the part of most jeepney drivers to join the research; b. shortage of budget; c. not enough time more complex, yet more accurate procedures. Through these circumstances, the researchers have learned a lot of better ways and plans in pursuing this research. It is hoped that accurate results will be obtained in order to help evaluate the problem regarding etiology aspects concerning jeepney drivers and pulmonary tuberculosis. |
