Summary, etc. Abstract: Soil-transmitted Helminthiases (STH), an intestinal infection caused by helminth parasites, rank first among diseases in the school-age population of developing countries worldwide. It remains as a major public health concern in the Philippines. Among the common intestinal parasites, Ascaris lumbricoides is the largest nematode to infect humans, causing an infection called Ascaraisis. The researchers conducted a study on the anthelmintic property of the aqueous and ethanolic extract of Senna alata (L.) Roxb. leaves against nematode Ascaris suum. The leaves collected were air-dried and subjected to aqueous and ethanolic extraction procedures. The extracts were prepared in different concentrations - 10 mg/mL, 25 mg/mL and 50 mg/mL - for Worm Motility Inhibition Assay. Based on the results, both of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of S. alata leaves are effective against Ascaris suum adult worms. All of the concentrations immobilized and ceased the action of the adult worms. There is no significant difference between the effect 500 mg Mebendazole and 50 mg/mL ethanolic extract. Also, there is no significant difference between the concentrations of aqueous and ethanolic extracts. Therefore, the researchers, conclude that the extracts of S. alata leaves have anthelmintic property.
