Summary, etc. Abstract: The researches aim to test the efficacy of Tamarindusindica leaf extract as a reducing agent in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. This study aims to know the effectiveness of Tmarindusindica leaf extract as a reducing agent, the antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles, and the size and shape exhibited by the silver nanoparticles. The researches started their experiment by preparing the leaf extract at the Chemistry Laboratory of Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation. For the preparation of Tamarindusindica leaf extract, the researches cleaned and dried the collected leaves and then cut into smaller pieces. The leaves were then boiled and the extract from the boiled leaves were then filtered. The researches prepared the silver nanoparticle solution by mixing 90mL of 3M silver nitrate solution with 10mL of the leaf extract to reduce the silver nitrate into silver nanoparticles. A change in color was observed. The researches then characterized the silver nanoparticles using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) at the Department of Science and Technology. The presence of silver nanoparticles was observed because it exhibited a size of 7.60998 nm and a spherical shape. The researches then tested the silver nanoparticles for its antimicrobial activity by doing an antimicrobial assay. Each well in two Mueller-Hinton Agar containing gram positive Staphylococcus aureusand gram negative Serratiamarcescenshas two drops of the silver nanoparticle solution in it. tha agars were then incubated for 24 hours at 37°C. A zone of inhibition from both agars were seen. Based on the results of this study, it can be inferred that Tamarindusindica leaf extract is effective as a reducing agent in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles and these AgNPs demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureusand Serratiamarcescens. The researches identified certain areas in their research that could be further studied such as the use of other plants ( as well as other plants parts) in the production of an extract, the use of other elements as antimicrobial agents, testing of antimicrobial activity of AgNPs against other bacteria, and the use of other organisms such as viruses and fungi.
