Abstract: Air pollution has been a progressive problem in the Philippines, specifically in Metro Manila. It has always been difficult to be studied because of its status and condition, which have made it difficult for researchers to explore the factors that contribute to air pollution. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 necessitated the government to implement protocols to prevent further transmission of the virus. The Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) led to a decrease in human activities t hat made the vehicular lesser than before the pandemic, improving Metro Manila's air quality. However, the implementation of Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) made Metro Manila's improved air quality return to its state before the pandemic, supported by various literature. This research explores what significant events and protocols contribute to the rise or drop of PM2.5 in Metro Manila covering the years 2015 to 2020 through qualitative content analysis. The analysis highlighted how vehicular volume is continuously increasing, while the amount, while the amount of PM2.5 decreased during the last two years before the pandemic. The content analysis results were able to reflect that other factors such as area and industrial sources were regulated during the latter years, which is the reason for the improved air quality. Also, the quarantine measures implemented during the pandemic significantly improved the air quality that even met the World Health Organization (WHO)standard yet, as measures are eased, the improved air quality is short-lived. Given these findings, the researchers developed a protocol considering advancements in transportation system and modification of existing protocols that will be strictly implemented to improve and maintain Metro Manila's air quality. |
