Abstract: The goal of this study is to help recognize memes as an effective and cheap way to mitigate the effect of perceived stress on Gr. 12 high school students. The study probes on the experiences of students who experience stress and as to how memes helped them, if it is effective or not, and the factor that affected the effectiveness of memes. The sample is limited only to Grade 12 students in the senior high school of Far Eastern University - Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation, Academic Year 2021-2022. The study uses phenomenological approach to collect data specifically on students' experience in using memes to mitigate stress and depression amidst online class. Makeover, it appears that memes induce laughter that causes students to feel happier, Lighter in mood, and less pressured. Furthermore, memes help students to feel validated and understood as they could relate to memes. Another thing is that the effective type of memes depends on its relatability, preferences, and sense of humor of students. The common sources of stress to students are piling academic workload, family problems, and painful past recollections. The participants took an interview were the researchers asked them questions about their opinions, relatability, shareability, and effectiveness potential of memes on mitigating perceived stress. In conclusion, participants perceive memes as a relatable, humorous, educational, and entertaining pastime. Furthermore, all participants were stressed for various reasons, which included academic responsibilities, personal problems, family problems and unpleasant memories from the past. Memes, according to some participants, help individuals cope with stress. However, some argue that it may also provoke individual because of the content of memes that are below the belt. Makeover, students use memes to temporarily divert themselves from their problems, which help to clear their thoughts and reduce stress. The researchers recommends the use of memes for mitigation of perceived stress, for strengthening family relationship, and for further academic researches |
