Abstract: Stroke is a leading cause of disability that results from an interruption of the blood flow to the brain that leads to neurological deficits that affect the bodily functions of an individual that collectively impacts the different aspects of activities of daily living (ADLs) of stroke patients, be it basic or instrumental. To describe the frequency of performance in the instrumental aspect of daily living (IADLs) of post-stroke patients, which may guide clinicians in prescribing managements in the future that may help patients have a better functionality, leading to a better quality of life. Our study used a descriptive design wherein sixty-five respondents were surveyed regarding the frequency of performance in the ADLs of post-stroke patients with the use of Frenchay Activities Index (FAI), an outcome measure that assessed the frequency of performance of patients in activities associated with daily living in areas such as domestic chores, leisure/work, and outdoor activities, that will help determine the frequency of performance in IADL of post-stroke patients. Sixty-five respondents had a mean score of 22.58 in FAI, wherein the respondents have the highest mean score in the Outdoor Activities subscale (8.23). Although the Domestic Chores subscale has the second highest mean score (7.97), high variability of responses was observed (SD = 3.11). Leisure/Work (6.38), although having the lowest mean score among the three subscales, had the lowest variability (SD = 1.91). Our study provides evidence that post-stroke patients were found to have a higher frequency in performing IADLs when outdoors as compared with domestic chores. "Leisure/Work" subscale which has the least frequency in performing IADLs, may help by guiding the clinicians in providing managements that focus more on improving the frequency of performing IADLs of post-stroke patients, with emphasis on the aspects of leisure and work by incorporating activities in the management that encourage the patients to actively pursue hobbies, do household maintenance, have gainful work, practice decision making skills, participate in social occasions, and travel outdoors; as a result, enhance the overall frequency in performing IADLs of post-stroke patients; therefore, contributing in the advancement of the physical therapy profession. |
