Abstract: Many research studies investigated the various factors, such as the students' demographic profile, type of institutions, and beliefs, that contribute to the mental health literacy of students from different universities. However, few studies examine other mental health disorders aside from depression and if medical field students, specifically Medical Laboratory Science students, are more mental health literate and more affected than students from other fields. This study aimed to determine the different factors affecting the mental health literacy of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) students. This research utilized a quantitative cross-sectional and correlational study design. Respondents included in the study are Medical Laboratory Science Students from the FEU-NRMF. Respondents were identified through convenience sampling and these respondents were asked to answer an adapted questionnaire online which was analyzed with the use of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). Frequency and percentage, total sums, weighted mean, and chi-square test of association were used to present and analyze the results of the study. It can be inferred from the findings of the study that MLS students have a high mental health literacy level. There is a significant relationship between year level and attitudes that promote recognition or appropriate health-seeking behavior. These is also a significant relationship between the level of MHL and the following factors: the ability to recognize disorder, attitudes that promote recognition or appropriate health-seeking behavior, and in terms of the stigma of being diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Overall, the mental health literacy level is significantly associated towards the respondents' mental health literacy profile in terms of ability to recognize disorder, attitude that promotes recognition or appropriate health seeking behavior, stigma on being diagnosed with mental health disorder and awareness on the accessibility of professional and supportive assistance towards mental health. |
