Summary, etc. ABSTRACT:
A thesis entitled “A Descriptive Study on the Mean Grip Strength of Adults in Rizal” was conducted to establish a baseline data on mean grip strength among residents of Brgy. Dela Paz Antipolo City with a total population of 74,300,220. The study aims to determine the mean grip strength of adults in Rizal province as they were grouped into young, middle and late adults, according to their gender as well as their hand dominance. Subjects were obtained from random cluster sampling and were subdivided into young adults, middle adults and late adults. Two hundred twenty subjects were chosen. One hundred and twelve (112) were classified under young adults, seventy-five (75) under middle adults and thirty-two (32) under late adults. Considering the gender, one hundred thirty-two (132) subjects were females and ninety-eight (98) subjects were males. Several inclusion criteria were considered which are: the age of eighteen years old and above, either male or female and that doesn’t have
history of any hand pathology. Grip strengths were measured using a Baseline pneumatic dynamometer (unit: psi), per subject, a total of six trials were done wherein three trials each for the dominant and non-dominant hand with a minute rest interval between each trial. This study has obtained the mean grip strength among selected adults in Brgy. Dela Paz Antipolo City. The total subjects covered by this study are two hundred nineteen (219). The following results have been obtained after a
thorough evaluation of all the data taken: The mean grip strength among the males is 13.51 psi on the dominant hand and 13.27 psi on the non-dominant hand. The mean grip strength among females is 9.08 psi on the dominant hand and 9.01 psi on the non-dominant hand. The authors also determined the mean grip strength among all subjects regarding their hand dominance wherein dominant hands’ strength is 10.86 psi and of the non-dominant hand is 10.72 psi. The young adults showed the greatest hand grip strength which is 11.53 psi. The middle adults 10.74 psi is the mean grip strength. The late adults 8.32 psi is the mean grip strength. Results showed that grip strength is strongest in young adults as compared to middle and late adults, and typically greater in males than in females, and in dominant than on the non-dominant side. These data support the conclusion of literature that age, hand dominance and gender highly affect the grip strength of an individual.
