Summary, etc. Abstract:
This study reviews the possible causes, prevention and treatment of shoulder subluxation in stroke patients. Shoulder subluxation is one of the most troublesome complications that impede the rehabilitation of patients with stroke and causes complications such as pain, loss of motion, decreased joint integrity and can make the shoulder more prone to dislocations. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Kinesio Tape and Electrical Stimulation on stroke patients with an inferior subluxation of the glenohumeral joint. To determine the extent of subluxation and the amount of reduction after application of Kinesio Tape, fingerbreadth palpation method of the same shoulder was taken which involves measuring from the tip of the
acromion process to the humeral head. Convenience Sampling Technique was utilized in selecting 30 post-stroke patients with shoulder subluxation to be the sample population. The study participants were divided into 2 groups: the first group comprising 16 patients received ES while the second group comprising 14 patients underwent Kinesio taping. ES group received ES on the posterior deltoid and the supraspinatus muscle for ~3 weeks while the KT group applied Kinesio tape on the subluxated shoulder over the anterior, middle and posterior deltoid muscle for 3-5 days duration for a period of 3 weeks. An analysis of variance revealed that there was no significant change in the extent of shoulder subluxation when electrical stimulation was used (p-value 1.0); but on the other hand, a significant change was seen in the measurement of shoulder subluxation with Kinesio tape (p-value .002). The results of this study demonstrate the benefits of Kinesio Tape in the management of stroke patients with subluxated shoulders and will also be beneficial to the physical therapy profession by broadening the knowledge base of the field and
promoting the use of innovations in patient care.
