Summary, etc. ABSTRACT:
Caring is a core nursing value (Watson, 2002) and has been considered as a major component, an important indicator, and a foundation of quality nursing education. Nurses are advised to recognize all aspects of aging changes and respond to the
specific diverse demands of older adult’s care in a similar way to the care for other nursing fields. This study explored and described the student nurses’ caring attitude when it comes to giving gerontological care. This study shows the attitude of student nurses in the delivery of nursing care of the elderly patients and the most important caring behaviors of student nurses as perceived by the elderly patients. This study used cross-sectional approach; the elderly was interviewed with the use of modified Cronin and Harrison’s Caring Behavior Assessment (CBA) Tool, this tool is based on Watson’s ten carative factors. Non-probability purposive sampling was used in this study. The subjects of this study were 114 geriatric patients, 57 from the nursing home and 57 from a tertiary hospital. The patients should be 65 and above for them to be included in the study. Residents and inpatients that have medical conditions requiring strict isolation or constant medical intervention such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease that were diagnosed; and those with special consideration on family request for
the patient will be excluded from the study. The result of this study determined that the most perceived caring attitude is
Helping-Trusting, Supportive/Protective/Corrective Environment, and Humanism/FaithHope/Sensitivity among the ten carative factors. And the three most important of the ten carative factors that the elderly chose are Helping-Trusting (80.7%), Humanism/FaithHope/Sensitivity (71.1%), and Supportive/ Protective/Corrective Environment (59.6%). The researchers therefore conclude that the carative factors are important when rendering care especially the Helping-Trusting.
