Summary, etc. ABSTRACT:
Behavior of Novice Nurses towards Stress In A Tertiary Hospital In Quezon City Studies revealed that novice nurses experienced challenges and stressful events in transition of newly graduate nurses to registered nurses (Higgins G. et al, 2010). As they enter a new adjustment period, they are exposed to varying patients, environment, and colleagues. To lessen or resolve stress, the novice nurses exhibit different behaviors and take actions to the particular situation which may be classified in these
behaviors as either problem-focused strategy, emotion-focused strategy, both or neither. The aim of this study is to identify the behavior of novice nurses toward stress in a tertiary hospitals in Quezon City in four domains, namely; patients, environment,
colleagues and personal. The research questionnaire composed of two parts; the first part consisted of the novice nurse’s demographic data, and the second part a self-administered questionnaire by the Cope mechanism questionnaire were used as the tool for collecting data. Descriptive method was used to analyze the data. The total population of newly hired nurses is 101. The study population consisted of 92 novice nurses (47 female and 44 male) working among tertiary hospitals in Quezon City. The findings reveal that in environment and colleagues domain the mostly used behavior is the combination of problem-focused and emotion-focused behavior with 44.6% and 53.3%; while problem-focused strategy is prevalent in patients with 45.7% and personal domains with 60.9%. The results imply that dissimilar events require different strategies where; both the problem-focused and emotion-focused strategies are applied in facing such circumstances. The researchers recommend to the future researchers to compare the difference in the behaviours between novice nurses to experienced nurses, to explore the causes of stress in tertiary hospitals in Quezon City, and to seek other behaviours (e.g. biological) that novice nurse’s use and to find its effectiveness. The research will help the novice nurses in raising awareness of the different behaviour strategies used in
response to stress in tertiary hospitals in Quezon City.
