Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: Blood transfusion is a procedure encountered daily in the practice of physicians. The need for transfusion has been from minor injuries to life saving circumstances. The benefits from blood transfusion do come with risks, and if done inappropriately, the patients suffer. Collaboration among regional, national and international health related organizations have developed clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) on the proper use of blood and its components for transfusion, applicable at respective levels. Despite being a procedure done very frequently, international studies provide evidence that it is one of the most overused medical intervations. These studies point out inadequacies in the knowledge of transfusion medicine among practicing physicians, from residents to consultants. The BEST TEST Collaborative developed a validated questionnaire to evaluate the necessary knowledge of physicians for transfusion medicine, which has been used in nine different countries. Different instruments have been developed to determine knowledge on transfusion medicine, but the internationally developed, validated, and largest or widely used tool is the BEST TEST.
