Abstract: Depression is one of the major risk factors for chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. It is second to weak ejection fraction as a major cause of death due to cardiac illness. This condition is well-researched among chronically-ill patients as a risk factor for their increasing morbidity and mortality. However, little is known on its effects on the caregivers, who play a major role in the well-being of their patients. Studies have shown that caregivers significantly improve quality of life, anxiety, and depression of patients; but along with this is a significant effect on the burden of care, quality of life, depression and anxiety of the caregivers. This research determined the prevalence of depression among forty caregiver subjects using the Hamilton Depression Scale. It was found that 62.5% are suffering from either mild, moderate or severe depression. Because of the high prevalence of depression, the study focused on identifying the factors that may have affected or caused this depression. This was carried out by having the caregivers identify which factors among the three groups: personal, social and environmental, were present in their situations. When a Chi-Square analysis or one-proportion z-test of the data was performed, only the concern for financial burden, inadequate family support and lack of time for oneself proved to significantly affect depression among caregivers. With these factors in mind, the researchers recommend that they addressed to alleviate the depression of the these Filipino caregivers and enhance their quality of life. A healthy lifestyle will bring about an increase in longevity, decrease in health care costs, and increase in productivity by decreasing illness and absenteeism. A happy caregiver equates to a happy patient. |
