520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Abstract: A program was implemented by the Third Year Class III-A a.) To determine the magnitude of smoking practices in the I.M. community, b.) to know whether smoking was associated with school, and / or work pressures, c.) to reduce the prevalence of smoking by 10% for a period of 34 school days and d.) to increase the population awareness of the health hazards of smoking. The first two objectives were met by conducting a survey of the I.M. population, the remaining objectives were met by implementing activities that would encourage everyone to consider a smoke-free community. It was found that 15.54% of the I.M. population were composed of smokers and that school and / or work pressures was the primary reason for engaging in smoking behavior among the students and personnel, and to a lesser degree, the faculty members as well. During the program implementation, a 52.68% reduction in the prevalence of smoking was achieved, and on final evaluation, 60% of the population claimed that the program increased their awareness of the health hazards of smoking.
