Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: Intestinal parasitism is one of the most commonly encountered health problem in developing countries. In the Philippines, personal hygiene plays an important role birth in the prevention and acquisition of parasites. The researchers aim to decrease the intestinal parasitism and worm burden and to increase the level of knowledge and awareness among Grade 1 pupils of Cielito Zamora Elementary School, Caloocan City. A quasi-experimental study was conducted during this month of October 2001 among Grade 1 pupil of Cielito Zamora Elementary School. All subjects were observed for proper hygiene and for the presence of intestinal parasite. Health Promotion (health Education and Mass Deworming) was done. Pretest and Posttest examination was conducted to determine the student`s level of knowledge and awareness. Results were computed using paired t-test. Also, stool samples were examined microscopically using direct smear. Out of 110 samples for the pre-stool examination, there were 56 (50.91%) who were positive for intestinal parasite while 54 (49.0%) who have none after three fecal smear. During the post test examination, there is a 96.4% decrease of intestinal parasite on a previously positive result of pre-stool examination, and a 90.8% decrease of intestinal parasitism on a previously negative pre-stool examination. Increase of 65.54% (test 1: Mode of Transmission), 53.40% (test 2: Sign and Symptoms), and 9.05% (Test 3: Prevention) were noted after the seminar was conducted. It is then concluded, that there is an increase of knowledge and awareness and decrease prevalence of parasitism among Grade 1 Students of Cielito Zamora Elementary School upon Implementation of such health strategies.
