Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: This study was done to establish an over-all description or profile of 95 licensed medical doctors, as well as their reasons for taking up nursing, conducted in different nursing schools within Metro Manila a population was selected by the use of non-probability sampling. Questionnaires were given to collect data regarding the demographic profile and reasons for shifting to nursing of the chosen population. Percentage and distribution of the collected information yielded the following results: There are more females (50.53%) compared to males (49.47% taking up Nursing in the said population. They are usually single (51.58%) and are general practitioners (30.53%). As to type of practice, private clinicians predominate (44.74%). These doctors are based in the National Capital Region (69.70%). with a monthly salary amounting to 51,000 PHp and above (42.10%). Most of them have plans of working abroad (95.79%) as Nurses through personal application (34.75%). With regards to their reasons for shifting to Nursing, most aspire for economic stability abroad (26.51%). There are no difference as to their respective reasons for taking up Nursing among the respondents in relation to gender, age, civil status, field of practice, years in practice, type and location of practice, plans to work abroad, and means of getting abroad. Most decided to become nurses and work in foreign countries due to Economic Stability abroad. Exceptions for this generalization are those physicians with specialties incorporated in the Others category (nuclear Medicine and Industrial Medicine), who tool up Nursing due to Opportunities to work as nurses abroad. Another exception include those previously practicing in Private Hospitals who wish to become nurses because of higher Salary.
