Summary, etc. Synephrine, L-p-Hydroxy-a (methylaminomethyl) benzyl alcohol, which was extracted from calamansi (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) waste using the method of Kinoshita was compared with epinephrine, the prototype of adrenergic agents, as to its relaxing effect on the uterine smooth muscle. This study is experimental in nature. The design is used because the experimental material is divided into groups such that the plots making up a particular block are homogenous. The objective of this study is to compare the effect of synephrine from calamansi wastes with the commercially prepared epinephrine using acetylcholine-induced smooth muscle (uterus) contraction of albino rats as parameter. Fifteen (15) uteri of albino rats were used in the study. They were administered with acetylcholine to induce contraction then were divided into 3 groups. Group A served as the control, Group B were given epinephrine and Group C, synephrine. Uterine activity of each rats were recorded using a kymograph machine. The effect of the two agents were compared by using the rate and amplitude of uterine contraction as parameters. Epinephrine yielded a mean amplitude of 12.50mm and a mean rate of 2.6 while synephrine yielded a mean amplitude and rate of 12.71mm and 2.6 respectively. The study revealed that there is no significant difference between synephrine and epinephrine in their relaxing effect on the uterine smooth muscle.
