Summary, etc. Diabetes has been one of the main diseases that gave problems to many populations in the world. The study was based on the idea of finding an accessible hypoglycemic agent that is within the natural flora of the country. Onion is a very promising natural resource, aside from being an herb, a favorite spice in food, and now as a medicinal plant. The study attempted to find the effect of glucose-water induced hyperglycemic male albino rats (Ratus norveigicus) by using 100% onion (Allium cepa) bulb extract,Glibenclamide (Euglucon) as positive control and distilled water as negative control. 30 male albino rats were used as subjects, were brought to Pharmacology Department Laboratory (FEU-NRMF) and were acclimatized for one week. Then the rats were fasted for 24 hours, glucose-water was given as food substitute, and left alone again for 24 hours. The blood glucose levels were determined for hyperglycemic levels for the 3 groups. Then the onion extract, Glibenclamide and distilled water were given. The rats were left to stay for 1 hour. The blood glucose was extracted thereafter for the succeeding two and three hours, with an hour interval. ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) was used with a confidence interval at 95%. The results showed an increase in the blood glucose levels for the first hour and a marked decrease in the second hour, as well as the third hour for the group that received the onion and a continued increase of blood glucose for the second and third hour on the rats that received Glibenclamide. The changes in the blood values of the rats that received distilled water were so minimal. The results of the study showed that onion probably could be used as a hypoglycemic agent, it`s effect is transient and delayed. However, further studies should be made utilizing an increased dosage of onion extract, longer duration of study, use of additional subjects or study groups, using other hypoglycemic agents, use of transgenic mice and the use of alloxan and streptozocin as hypoglycemic agents.
