| Summary, etc. | ABSTARACT: A crude ethanol extract of the seeds of the plant Moringa oleifera (malunggay) was analyzed for anti-inflammatory effect and compared with indomethacin using the carrageenan induced mice paw edema model. The study utilized 25 mice equally divided into 5 groups: Groups Ei, E2, and E3 treated with 158.49 mg/kg, 630.96 mg/kg, 2511.89 mg/kg of percolated (95% ethanol) dried malunggay seeds respectively. The other groups, groups C was treated with NSS while group 1 was treated with Indomethacin. Paw volumes for each test animal was measured using mercury displacement method. Baseline paw volumes were taken prior to the induction of inflammation. Acute inflammation was induced by injecting 1% carrageenan on the plantar surface of the right hind leg of the mice. After 30 minutes, the pre-treatment paw volumes of each test animal were measured. Test substances were then injected to the mice intraperitoneally. Post treatment paw volumes were measured after 30 minutes. The difference between pre- and post-treatment paw volumes were compared with that of the baseline paw volumes. A significant inflammatory activity ( P value < 0.05 ) were observed with groups E2 and E3, the latter being comparable with Indomethacin. The post-treatment paw volumes with EI, however showed no difference from the pre-treatment volumes which was similar to the results obtained from administration of the control NSS. |
