Abstract: Weighted management is essential for overall health a person since this could lower the risk of having many diseases. Sleep duration may be an important regulator of body weight and metabolism. It is thought that this relationship maybe mediated via changes in the levels of some of the neuropeptides such as Leptin and Ghrelin that regulate appetite. Study participants were 430 3rd year medical students of FEU-NRMF. Participants reported their sleep habits through questionnaires and 7 day sleep diary. BMI was measured using a standard mechanical medical weighing scale. Relationship between BMI and sleep duration were analyzed using Chi-Square Test of Independence. Results of the study showed that out of 430 students, 98 (22.79%) were categorized as having an above normal BMI and 58 out of 98 students or 59.18% has an average of <7 hours sleep. Given the result of the statistical analysis there is a significant relationship between weight and sleep duration. In addition, 147 (34.18%) of the participants were classified under normal BMI with an average of <7 hours sleep are at risk of becoming obese as evidence by the result of POR. |
