| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT: A cross sectional study was conducted which aimed to determine and increase the level of awareness of the FEU-NRMF employee about hypertension, its risk factors and its effects. This study was also conducted to promote simple 15 minutes exercise which can be done at their houses or even at their offices to improve their blood circulation and lessen stress which are risk factors in the development of hypertension. The action group started with the distribution of pre-evaluation forms per department office for the determination of the employees' level of awareness of the risks and effects of hypertension. A total of 61 employees responded to the form. The pre-evaluation forms showed sixty-one percent (61%) of the employees are aware of the consequences of hypertension. Nighty-five percent (95%) are aware that hypertension maybe prevented by exercise and by not smoking. Ninety-two percent (92%) are aware that obesity causes hypertension while 93% of them know that chronic alcoholism is a risk factor too. Only fifty-six percent (56%) are aware that diet may prevent hypertension. Next, the determination of cholesterol blood levels and fasting sugar blood levels of the employees where held at the student's lounge of FEU-NRMF which was sponsored by Therapharma, Philippines. Out of 61 participants, 20 were hypertensive and 41 are non-hypertensive. Only 37 employees are willing to have their fasting blood sugar taken while only32 employees are willing to have their total blood cholesterol levels measured. Instructional Pamphlets which contain information about hypertension, its risk factors, effects and prevention were then distributed to each department offices. The action group also explained the food pyramid guide and taught the employees how to use it. A short video presentation of simple 15 minute exercises was shown after the health teaching. Feedback forms were distributed after the health teaching for evaluation of the events as to its impact on the employees and if they have been doing the 15 minute exercises. The feedback forms showed that after the action plan there was an increase from sixty-one percent (61%) to sixty-six (66%) of employees who know the consequences of hypertension, there was also an increase in the level of awareness that hypertension may be prevented by regular exercise, cessation of smoking and healthy diet. All the employees are aware that obesity can cause hypertension. After the action plan, ninety-five percent (95%) of the employees said that they are doing the exercise and that they are committing themselves to doing it regularly. |
