Abstract: In order to sustain energy for the body, certain compounds are needed. Among these compounds are cholesterol, triglyceride, and glucose. Lipids and carbohydrates are important to the human body. They are used as percursors of different molecules, which also serves as a major source of dynaminsm for cellular processes. Dilemmas in their metabolism may lead to certain disorders, which are one the consequences of hyperlipidemia. Currently, dietary changes and hypolipidemic drugs are used to treat these disorders. However, inspite of their efficacy, they still cause several side effects. Chitosan was seen as a possible treatment for hyperlipidemia. Studies have been made regarding its use and unfortunately, contradicting results were presented. This study verified the effect of chitosan on serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and glucose levels in normal male individuals consuming both a balanced and high-fat diet. Twelve normal male students, from Section IC2, were chosen to participate in the experiment. They underwent a 10-day balanced diet and high-fat diet, both of which were divided into periods - 1) five days with diet alone and 2) the remaining five days with diet and chitosan. |
