Summary, etc. Abstract: This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of the proteolytic enzymes, papain and bromelain against the gold standard, sulfadiazine, in the treatment of induced second degree burn wound in ICR mice. Experimental type of research design was used in this study. Burns were induced by thermal contact through the use of soldering iron on the dorsolateral area of the body of 28 mice. The mice were then grouped into four; control, 1% sulfadiazine, papain and bromelain. The induced second degree burn wound of the first group of mice (control ) were applied with 1%silver sulfadiazine; the third group were treated with cold cream containing 1% papain and the fourth group received cold cream containing 1% bromelain. After which, punch biopsies were done on each mice every day for 7 consecutive days and sent for histophathological examinations. Three parameters were used to check for the efficacy of the topical preparations and these were wound re-epithelialization; formation of granulation tissue through the appearance of fibroblasts and collagen; and degree of inflammation. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. The histophatological wounds of those mice treated with bromelain and papain are comparable to those given with silver sulfadiazine. Mice treated with bromelain showed lesser degree of inflammation which is comparable to that of the standard drug, whereas, in terms of granulation, papain is as efficient as suldiazine. The effect of both papain and bromalein on the induced second degree burn wounds on ICR mice are comparable to that of sulfadiazine. The group recommends the further researches using Sprague Dawley rats maybe in the future because of the stability of their skin and a larger number of samples be used in the experiment. Furthermore, the use of varying concentrations of the enzymes be tested.
